The Seminole Legacy Golf Club at Florida State University Announces March 10 Opening Date
TALLAHASSEE (Mar. 7, 2020) – Seminole Legacy Golf Club at Florida State University, the new Jack Nicklaus Legacy Course that will serve as home to the Seminole men’s and women’s golf teams, announces an official opening date of March 10, 2020. Built on the site of the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course, Seminole Legacy Golf Club is set to be one of the premier courses on the collegiate golf circuit and in the state.
A Jack Nicklaus Legacy Course represents a design collaboration between golf icon Jack Nicklaus, and his talented son, Jack Nicklaus II. Jack II, who has served as President of Nicklaus Design and is now Vice-Chairman of the Nicklaus Companies, took the design lead on the re-imagining of the FSU golf course. This is the first Jack Nicklaus Legacy Course to open in North America.
“The Nicklaus Family has a lot of history at Florida State,” said Jack Nicklaus, winner of a record 18 major championships and designer of close to 310 courses worldwide. “My son Steve played football there, we have six grandchildren who went to FSU, including three of Jack II’s. We also have a grandson, Nick O’Leary, who was an All-American and won a national title there. So when given the opportunity to leave a legacy of golf at the university, we were honored.
“The canvas we were presented is a gorgeous one, with lots of movement, elevation changes and beautiful mature trees. It was then our job to unlock the property and provide FSU with the best golf course possible. My son Jack II and I have collaborated on a couple dozen golf courses, but he took the lead on the FSU design. I was certainly involved and offered many suggestions when appropriate or needed. In all, the entire Nicklaus Design team did a terrific job. More importantly, we hope the university, the FSU golf program, the alumni, and the Tallahassee community are proud of the end result.”
Jack II followed closely in his father’s footsteps in many ways. Like his father, an NCAA Champion at Ohio State, Jack II was a collegiate star at the University of North Carolina. He won the prestigious North & South Amateur at Pinehurst in 1985—26 years after his father won the title. Jack II eventually followed his father’s path to golf course design, and now both are respected members of the American Society of Golf Course Architects.
“I am so proud and excited about the Seminole Legacy Golf Club, as we hand over this great golf course to Florida State University,” Jack II said. “Our team at Nicklaus Design collaborated closely with golf coaches, Amy Bond and Trey Jones. Together, I believe, we have created something special. Our golf course is flexible—to be enjoyed by all levels of golfers. FSU now has a championship golf course that complements its talented men’s and women’s golf teams, as well as a product that complements a great University. Fun golf strategy with risk/reward; beautiful views; and a walk through nature, highlighted with majestic live oak trees and inviting contours. That is the experience at the Seminole Legacy Golf Club. Once played, the reaction I hope for is, ‘I can’t wait to play Seminole Legacy again!’ ”
The comprehensive multi-million-dollar golf course renovation and redesign included reconfiguration and rebuilding of all 18 holes, a new short course and practice facility and the addition of a new lake alongside the 8th hole. The par-72, 18-hole golf course, stretching 7,800 yards and offering up to eight sets of tees, presents a stern test for lower-handicap players with a variety of strategic shot-making opportunities but also an enjoyable round for the beginning golfer playing from the appropriate tee.
“We are so excited to finally be opening the course and the club to the public,” said Jaxon Hardy, general manager. “Our Founders and Inside the Ropes members have been playing since early January and we’ve received nothing but rave reviews. I am certain the course will bring additional prestige to the University and the school’s golf program, and provide an outstanding golf facility to the community.”
