The Dallas Morning News last week published its highly anticipated rankings of the Top 100 Golf Courses and 18 Best, Most Beautiful Holes in the State of Texas, and the lists had a decided Nicklaus flavor. Nine Nicklaus Design courses made the list of 100, and seven of the top 18 holes in the state were Nicklaus Design.
The top spot in the list of 100 again went to Nicklaus Design’s Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity. Cordillera Ranch in Boerne and The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands also finished within the top-10, ranking Nos. 5 and 10, respectively. Other Nicklaus Design courses that made the list: Lochinvar Golf Club in Houston (No. 20); Dallas Athletic Club, Blue Course (No. 44); Cimarron Hills Golf & Country Club in Georgetown (No. 52); The Traditions Club at Texas A&M in Bryan (No. 57); The Hills Country Club, The Hills Course, in Austin (No. 59); and the Dallas Athletic Club, Gold Course (No. 60).
Courses were judged based on versatility, shotmaking, design, afterthoughts, beauty, maintenance, and enjoyment. To be eligible for the top 100, a course needed to be rated by 13 of the 88 panel members.
The 18 Best, Most Beautiful Holes list recognized seven Nicklaus Design holes, including five of the final six holes at Whispering Pines (Holes 13, 14, 15, 17 and 18) . Other Nicklaus Design courses that made the list are the 16th at Cordillera Ranch and No. 7 at The Hills Country Club.
